Sarkar 3: Film Review – Makes for a Good One-time Watch

Verdict: A suspense that cannot sustain the film.

Sarkar 3 is the third instalment of the decently successful Sarkar series directed by Ram Gopal Varma. For the uninitiated, Subhash Nagre is Sarkar, a beloved and a morally sound political figure with immense power and public support. In the prequels Sarkar (2005) and Sarkar Raj (2008), Nagre loses both his sons under tensed circumstances. Sarkar 3 brings back the charismatic Mr. Bachchan as the stoic and wise Sarkar.

As one might guess, the movie opens with Sarkar's (Amitabh Bachchan) hand, with the iconic rings and the rudraksh beads, waving out to the public, who are cheering for him. This is coupled with some kickass background music and you find yourself looking forward to watching this movie. A shady and nasty character, Gandhi (the irony is not lost on us) approaches Sarkar with a deal regarding a mill on behalf of a certain Sir (played by the suave-as-ever Jackie "The Bhidu" Shroff). Sarkar flatly refuses and Gandhi is shown his way out by his manFridayGokul (Ronit Roy) and the muscle, Raman. Also, Sarkar's grandson Chicku aka Shivaji (Amit Sadh) expresses his desire to work with Sarkar. Govind Deshpande (Manoj Bajpayee, the champion) is an ambitious politician who publicly mocks Sarkar and his ways during a speech. In an interesting turn of events, things suddenly change and all the interpersonal relationships flip a 180. Now, the audience is expected to guess who is on whose side. However, unfortunately, you figure it out way before the film unfolds it for you.

Sarkar 3 Film Review - BookMyShowAmit Sadh is sincere and it shows that he really wants to give this role a 100%. We appreciate it, Amit. Ronit Roy pulls off a poker face as perfectly as he emotes. Yami Gautam looks very nice when she smiles and…well, that's it. Manoj Bajpayee, as usual, delivers one helluva performance. Amitabh Bachchan is as one would expect him to be in Sarkar – intensely engaging and charismatic. A special shoutout to the mommies – Supriya Pathak Shah and Rohini Hattangadi.

The film has its fair share of aberrations like the grossly imperfect Marathi accent that might gnaw at you, the bizarre in- and out-focus patterns, the clunky dialogues that deflate the intensity the scenes manage to build up, unanswered incidents and a few loopholes in the script. However, the classic RGV style shows in Sarkar 3 and that keeps you engaged. The story is good (it's quite similar to Sarkar, actually), the characters are interesting, and the background score is intense. Jackie Shroff’s strange dialogues with his girlfriend are funny-ish. For all its worth, the 90’s born fangirl in me was totally enamored by Jackie Shroff.

Why Should You Watch This Movie:

If you are a Sarkar franchise and an RGV fan, this one is a good watch for you and you know it. Otherwise, too, if you are looking to spend a Sunday afternoon at the theatres, Sarkar 3 is an entertaining choice.
