Onibaba is a Japanese horror film by Kaneto Shindo. It is a haunting tale based on Japanese folklore and also the director’s horrifying experience of the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombings. The demonic mask from the film leaves a deep impact upon the minds of the audience. It is ghostly and disturbing.
Leatherface – The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The unforgettable villain, Leatherface. This Tobe Hooper classic saw the chainsaw-wielding madman, who wears a mask made from human skin of his victims (gak!). It has been giving us heebee-jeebies since 1974. This grotesque mask is threatening and yes, scary. Might be a little difficult to make, but you sure can give it a try.
Michael Myers – Halloween
Blank, baggy and uncanny. John Carpenter’s film gave us the creeps with the expressionless mask of Michael Myers. P.S.: It was based on a death mask made from William Shatner’s face for an episode of Star Trek.
No, it isn’t the cute emoticon. In fact, it is terrifying and unsettling. There are no facial features, but it’s the stitched up gashes which forms the smile and eyes that makes the whole character repulsive.
Jigsaw pig mask – Saw
Even though we don’t see much of the character in the film, the thought itself can give us a chill down our spine. Perhaps it is scarier and than all the mayhem the movie portrays. Those disheveled black hair and hollow eyes. Enough said.
Rabbit Mask – Donnie Darko
Well, this proves that all rabbits aren’t cute. This nightmarish bunny is something which we don’t want to ever face in our lives. It is eerie and highly-disturbing. Suddenly bunnies aren’t adorable, are they now?
Grinning faces – The Purge
Sometimes a smile can be harrowing. Take this for instance. Eerie toothy grin and raised eyebrows. They certainly aren’t very friendly.
These masks can definitely give you some hair-raising moments.
Hannibal Lecter’s muzzle – The Silence of the Lambs
This perhaps is the most-iconic mask in Hollywood thrillers. Even though not grotesque, there is something about this mask of cannibalistic serial killer Dr. Hannibal Lecter. The eyes of a killer which stare down at you.
Jason Voorhees – Friday the 13th
He rocks one of the most-epic masks in film history. This iconic mask can give you goosebumps at its mere thought. It was the first time that an ordinary piece of sporting equipment became a symbol of terror.
The Cabin the Woods
They are cruel and sadistic. Depicted as humanoid figures wearing doll masks and black clothing, they definitely look scary. They aren’t supernatural, but yes, they look kind of cool too.
Fawkesian masks – V for Vendetta
Although not very creepy, this sinister mask from James McTeigue’s film V for Vendetta has become an emblem for anti-establishment protest groups. Even Nicky Romero used this mask for his video Toulouse.
