Verdict: A tight cop drama.
Vijay Sethupathi has donned several avatars in the past. With his subtle performance as the car driver in Pannaiyarum Padminiyum and his comic act as a rowdy in Naanum Rowdy Dhaan, Vijay Sethupathi has emerged as a versatile actor in Kollywood. And now, the actor has portrayed the role of a masala action hero in his latest film Sethupathi.
S. U. Arun Kumar, who had directed the impressive film Pannaiyarum Padminiyum has directed this film as well. While his first film brought out the beauty of emotions, Sethupathi is a commercial entertainer with ample doses of action.
However, what makes this film stand out is the film's engaging plot. It gives you an insight into the life of an honest police officer, Sethupathi (Vijay Sethupathi), and the opposition he faces from a local don named Vadiyar (Vela Ramamoorthy).
A film like this could've easily become one of those cliched commercial entertainers, where the lead character is portrayed as a larger-than-life hero. However, this film stands apart. It portrays the hero as a simple man, who tackles problems with his brain, not brawn. Devoid of any item numbers and duets, or even a solo dance number, the music of Sethupathi blends in seamlessly with the story. It's quite refreshing to see a film that sticks to the plot, and doesn't deviate. S. U. Arun Kumar's solid story and skillful narration makes this film a taut cop drama.
The film introduces us to Sethupathi as the married man, who is a loving father and a husband. The relationship between his wife and him is quite sweet. But what moves you the most, is the quality time he spends with his children. This is sure to bring a smile on your face. The kids in this film aren't merely caricatures, but help move the story forward. Apart from being the family man that he is, Sethupathi is also an honest and smart police officer, who fears none. He may look fierce and angry, but that doesn't stop him from having a sense of humor. His quick wit is also his strength. Such in-depth characterization is probably the biggest strength of this film. You're able to root for Sethupathi even when he's in trouble, and yet you yearn to see what Vadiyar's next plot is. The only negative point of the film is its hurried climax.
Vijay Sethupathi plays his role with utmost conviction. He successfully carries the film on his shoulders, and this is easily one of his best performances. Remya Nambeesan and Vela Ramamoorthy are memorable. The other supporting artists have also done a fine job. Nivas K. Prasanna's music is perfect for a film of this genre.
Why You Should Watch This Movie:
Sethupathi is an engaging cop drama loaded with the right amount of action and thrill. This film is for fans of Vijay Sethupathi and for those who love action films.
