Time flies. It was just yesterday that we were excited about Shahid Kapoor's new release and today Shaandaar completes a year. The Vikas Bahl-directed film was highly anticipated after Queen. As everyone knows now, Shaandaar wasn't received well. However, the director still very much believed in his film and even said that the viewers didn't get the idea of the movie right and that Shaandaar will be remembered as a cult classic in a few years. If we look at it, this can actually be true. There have been a lot of movies in the past that while not successful on release but became a classic later. And while we hope for the best, let's have a look at the five possible reasons Shaandaar can become one.
There have been many films like Andaz Apna Apna or Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro that didn't do well initially and met with negative critical reception but are considered as favorites and cult classics now. Considering Shaandaar was a huge box office failure and the biggest of critics gave the movie a thumbs down, there are chances of it becoming a cult favorite soon.
While reading cinema, students are often taught two important things – cinematic liberty and implausibility. Knowing that implausibility is the speciality of Indian masala cinema, the part where Kamla Arora dies because of sneezing and the fact that her dead body remains intact on the chair throughout the wedding, make it seem like the film is well-headed to become another chapter in Understanding Cinema.
Picturisation of imaginations
Apart from all not so good parts of the films like the story or the characters or everything, Shaandaar was a new attempt where dreams and imaginations where shown. For the first time is was not just through a dream song sequence. The locations and backdrops in the movie are quite amazing. Also, the art directors did a commendable job with the wedding theme. It was exactly like we picture our imaginary wedding to be. Certainly, there were many other eye appealing things other than Shahid and Alia in the movie that can make the movie a classic.
Let's talk about the section of the population that waits for the television broadcast of a movie. They may or may not have caught Shaandaar in the theaters. The television broadcast of a movie makes a lot of difference in the mass appeal of the film. Also, there have been many films that were not a box office success but have been responsible for high TRPs with their television premiere. Do not believe me? Go home and ask your granddad/dad to change the channel while he is watching Sooryavansham or Nayak.
Introduction to Insomnia
Films have always been remembered for introducing a new concept and since the inception of romance in cinema we know very well the symptoms of true love – "neend gayi, chain bhi gaya, saajna yahi pyaar hai". Shaandaar is not the first Bollywood movie to introduce the concept of insomnia but it sure gave the idea, love and romance completely new meanings. Being the first at something sure can make the movie a classic.
