One can’t deny that Deepika Padukone has had a fascinating journey towards stardom. From being the girl-next-door with a bright smile in the Close-Up advertisement, to playing a passionate and hot-blooded lover in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-Leela.
Padukone, who seemed like the underdog, or a one-film wonder has achieved everything that any top actress can achieve at her age. More power to her because she doesn’t have a filmy background neither does she come from an influential filmy family.
For someone who is only 6 years old in Bollywood, Padukone has single-handedly achieved superstardom. Today she is friends with the who’s who of Bollywood that includes, SRK, with whom she has delivered hits like Om Shanti Om and Chennai Express.
She is a part of the 100-crore club. She has worked with the biggest production houses in the industry that include, Red Chillies, Yash Raj Films, Dharma and now SLB films. She endorses a good number of big brands including Tissot, Sony Cybershot, Nescafe, Wrigley’s Orbit, Maybelline, Pepsi and Garnier. She also looks like a far polished version of her former self, both on-screen and off screen. So let’s have a quick flashback of Deepika Padukone’s from the start of her career till date.
Her first film in Bollywood, Om Shanti Om, must have been a dream debut for any newcomer. Not only did she star in the film with Shahrukh Khan, but the film became a blockbuster hit. Padukone also won a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. She looked young, yet immensely confident as she starred alongside the King of Romance, SRK.
In 2008, her performance in the romantic-comedy Bachna Ae Haseeno was received with negative reviews. Although love was blossoming between Ranbir and Deepika, it didn’t quite show on-screen. Her look in the film was passable.
In 2009, Padukone received praise for portraying the lead female role in Imtiaz Ali’s romance, Love Aaj Kal. This was Ali’s next film after the immense success and popularity of Jab We Met. So Deepika, who was still relatively new to the industry, had the onus of earning the praise that Kareena Kapoor got for her portrayal of Geet. Love Aaj Kal wasn’t as great a hit as Jab We Met, but Deepika did a fine job. One could easily notice her refined acting skills. She looked simple yet fab in all the kurtis she sported.
Although her performance wasn’t laudable in Housefull (2010), and the film too met with negative reviews, what stood out was the fact that, Deepika could look hot if she wanted to. Padukone sported a bikini for the first time on screen. Agreed, she didn’t look as hot as Lara Dutta, but she was getting there.
It was in 2012 that Homi Adjania’s Cocktail, hit the Box Office and this film marked a significant turning point in her career. It garnered critical-acclaim for her and she was also nominated for Best Actress at several award ceremonies. She played the wild-child to the hilt.
Only a year before the release of this film, she had had a break-up with her Bachna Ae Haseeno co-star Ranbir Kapoor. We’re guessing the break-up helped her play the wild-child effortlessly. 😉
With Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Deepika proved how professional she is, as she pulled off a great show with her ex-beau Ranbir Kapoor. She romanced him onscreen once again after Bachna Ae Haseeno and did a fab job. There were immense expectations from the film as well, as it was the second film of Ayaan Mukherjee, director of Wake Up Sid. The film surely didn’t match up to the levels of Wake Up Sid, but was a commercial success. Deepika tried her best to play a nerd in the first-half of the film, but Bollywood’s romanticized portrayal of nerdism limited her to looking nothing but a glamorous nerd wearing geeky wayfarers. Nevertheless, she looked cute in her "nerdy" avatar. But she sizzled all the way in her dolled-up avatar in the second-half of the film. The girl sure knew how to gracefully carry-off a nine yard and a lehenga as carrying off a chic summer dress.
With Chennai Express, she entered the 100-crore club, and established herself successfully as a leading actress in Hindi Cinema. Both Chennai Express and Ye Jawaani Hai Deewani rank amongst the highest-grossing Bollywood films of all time. She looked simply marvelous in all the traditional "South-Indian" finery.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s, Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-leela released to mixed reviews from audiences. The passion and chemistry between Ranveer and Deepika was apparent from the trailers and songs of the film itself. With this film in her kitty, she now has worked with the director who gave us classics like Khamoshi The Musical, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Black. She looks like a dream in the film. And dare I say, far more beautiful than what Aishwarya Rai looked in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
Miss Padukone’s career is on a high and so is she. Hope she keeps her feet grounded and her head on her shoulders. Going by the way she has drafted her career, we’re sure that she will.
