Sherlock Holmes was “killed” in the short story The Adventure of the Final Problem.

Factually, Sherlock Holmes was presumed dead after a confrontation with his archenemy, Professor Moriarty (‘The Final Problem’) He left a message to Watson, saying goodbye.

Only after several years did Sir Conan Doyle write a new story, and claimed that Sherlock hadn’t died, but had to stay hidden, even from his best friend, Dr. Watson.
