Shirin Farhad Ki Toh Nikal Padi: Movie Review

Review: It’s true when they say that love has no expiry date. Move over from teenage romances, here comes the new age mature love story where the man, 40 plus and single, is more than ready to be committed to the woman of his dreams. Meet the adorable Boman Irani who plays Farhad Pastakia, a lingerie salesman, smothered with affection by his mother played by Daisy Irani and his grandmother. A simple man with attainable goals, the man wants to find a woman to love and someday own a lingerie store. His years of experience in this field has helped him be a lingerie consultant. Farhad’s family keeps making an attempt to fix him up with a woman they think shall be the love of his life. But to no avail. However, everything is not as hunky-dory as it seems. The bone of contention is Farhad’s occupation, which causes him to be rejected by every girl he goes to meet.

On the other hand is Shirin Fugawala, a 40 year-old single woman who chose to take care of her family instead of settling down. As a true romantic would believe, fate has its ways when it comes to deciding your soulmate. To cut the long story short, man meets woman, woman meets man and hence begins their cutesy love affair. The romance is breezy and sweet and makes you fall in love with the characters so much so that regardless of your age, you will feel for these 40-something couple who have fallen in love for the first time.

Seen from a Parsi perspective, the film also touches upon the underlying issues in the community portrayed in a light-hearted, comic fashion. However, the execution could most definitely be a lot better which is also where the film lost its points, the expectations were a little higher than the end result especially when we’ve seen much better work coming out of Bela Sehgal, who has been associated with most of her brother Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s films as editor and has also directed few music videos with much panache.

Boman Irani just weaves magic into each role of his, he is simply superb. From playing a forgetful college principal in Farah Khan’s debut film, Main Hoon Naa to playing a strict father in Farhan Akhtar’s Lakshya, he’s come a long long way in less than a decade in the film industry. One may also wonder how comfortable he is with each co-star of his. After this film, one can also deduce that his professional relationship with choreographer-director, Farah Khan got her to share screen space with him, and the result of the film will add a few more feathers to each of their caps (hats).

Although the music wasn’t completely amazing, the feeling behind each song would keep you completely hooked to the screen. My favorite song is Ishq Mein Tere Bina, a moderately sappy romantic number. After being the pillar of support for many actors in many films, a solo hit is what one deserves. The film is bound to pull the mature Indian audience to the theatres and keep them smiling through its complete running time. Daisy Irani as the real Indian mother-in-law (imagine a nicer Lalita Pawar) does a fabulous job. One of the best parts was the various cues from the other films that have been wonderfully reformed. Nothing overdone. The only hope was to have a perfect film that one would remember for many years and probbaly draw references from. For now, just enjoy this feel-good story in a theatre near you.

Verdict: Cute and fuzzy, a good watch this weekend.
