Short Films: Oscar Nominations 2016

Short films were introduced as a category in Filmfare Awards only this year. There have been plenty of short films that have won the Academy Awards over the years though. There are two short films categories at the Oscars: Live Action and Animation. Each category has five nominations. These nominations range across different genres and languages and present to us a holistic image of where short film making stands today. 

This year the live action category has Ave Maria, Shok, Day One, Stutterer and Everything Will Be Okay (Alles Wird Gut). In the animated films category, there’s World of Tomorrow, Sanjay’s Super Team, We Can’t Live Without Cosmos, Prologue and Bear Story. You can enjoy short clips of these nominated films below. 
 
Ave Maria 
Basil Khalil and Eric Dupont give us the story of five nuns living in the West Bank and their encounter with an Israeli family. 

 
Shok
Shok is an intense short film about two young boys from Kosovo. It is directed by Jamie Donoughue. 

 
Day One
Directed by Henry Hughes, Day One is about an Afghan-American woman who is an interpreter with the U.S. military and is sent to Afghanistan on her first assignment. 

 
Stutterer
Stutterer is directed by Benjamin Cleary and Serena Armitage. It’s about a man who finds his speech impediment crippling him and leaving him isolated.  

 
Everything Will Be Okay (Alles Wird Gut) 
Directed by Patrick Vollrath, this short film is a touching tale about a desperate, devoted, divorced father and her eight-year-old daughter. 

 
World of Tomorrow 
This one shows us the power of ideas. The film directed by Don Hertzfeldt was the jury prize winner in Sundance Film Festival.  

 
Sanjay’s Super Team 
An interesting tale about developing new perspectives and accepting different ideas. The film is directed by Sanjay Patel and Nicole Grindle. 

 
We Can’t Live Without Cosmos
Directed by Konstantin Bronzit, this is a story of two boys and what they endure to fulfill a lifelong dream.

 
Prologue 
This short film directed by Richard Williams and Imogen Sutton depicts an intense battle between Spartan and Athenian warriors. 

 
Bear Story 
Directed by Gabriel Osorio and Pato Escala, this short film is an emotional story of a bear and his journey.
