Verdict: Most entertaining animated film of the year.
It is generally said that we watch films to escape reality. Films create a world of fantasy, far better than the real world, in which we live. This year, films just got better and better at creating worlds without any humans. Instead, animals functioned just like humans, living happily with one another. Zootopia did it, The Angry Birds Movie did it, and even Trolls did it with fictional creatures. The latest movie set in an animal-centric, fantasy world is Sing, and it is, according to us, the best animated feature of the year. It is vibrant, musical, and hilarious – everything an animated film should be.
Sing, as the name suggests, has everything to do with music. After watching a concert for the first time, Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey), a koala bear, had only one dream – to own a theatre. His father helps him fulfill that dream, but after a string of failed performances, he runs into financial losses. To make things worse, the bank is threatening to take over the property and Moon’s usual sponsors – his friend Eddie’s rich parents – pull out. To keep the theatre running, Moon decides to have a singing competition. But his assistant accidentally adds three extra zeroes at the end of the $100 prize money, and contestants show up expecting a large amount of money. An overtly positive Moon decides to wing it, but his plans greatly backfire. And the dreams of Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), Mike (Seth MacFarlane), Ash (Scarlett Johansson), Meena (Tori Kelly), Johnny (Taron Egerton), and Gunter (Nick Kroll), might just be crushed.
The plot of the movie is like any other animated feature – it is the story of hopes and dreams, and helping one another fulfill them. But the treatment of the story is highly unique. The movie is a laughter fest from the very beginning to the end. As expected, the characters are hilarious, and none of the punches seem too forced. There is no lead character, as such, but Buster Moon, his secretary Karen, his friend Eddie, and all the contestants play equally important roles in entertaining the audience. With such a large cast, there’s at least one character everyone can relate to.
Special attention has been paid to the soundtrack of the movie, given that it is a musical. There are some songs that you may have heard before, like Katy Perry’s Firework, Taylor Swift’s Shake It Off, and Under Pressure by Queen. The soundtrack has been chosen to keep up the fun and upbeat mood of the movie. The original, as well as recreated tracks, blend brilliantly with the narrative, and you can’t help but sing along with the characters. There’s too much sugar, and spice and everything nice, making it ideal to watch with the entire family.
Why You Should Watch This Movie:
If you liked Zootopia, then you must watch Sing. It is just like the Disney movie, but with music and dance. Sing is a highly entertaining watch, and probably one of the best animated films you will see this year. Do not miss this one!
