Dozens of mind-blowing car crashes, energetic action sequences and epic punchlines. Yes, that’s a Rohit Shetty film. With the same ingredients sprinkled with added masala, Rohit Shetty is back with Singham Returns. If you are a fan of muscle-flexing heroes who can deliver killer dialogues with panache, Singham Returns will definitely sweep you off your feet.
Bajirao Singham (naam toh suna hoga?) is a bad-ass cop. Clad in a perfectly-fitted Khaki uniform with his trademark aviators, this super cop unabashedly jumps, flies, kicks and slaps the baddies. He is a no-nonsense cop who ardently follows the mantra of his life – "Mein leta nahin, deta hoon". In a nutshell, he does whatever a typical hero in a Rohit Shetty film does. The sequel to 2011 hit Action film -Singham – hits the big screens this weekend. And he definitely roars louder! Bajirao Singham played by Ajay Devgn is back with his usual panache and masochism. This time he’s in Mumbai, as the new DCP of the Mumbai Police Force.
Guruji (played by Anupam Kher) is a righteous political leader, who aims to bring a change in the political system. But a corrupt politician (played by Zakir Hussain), and an immoral ‘dharam guru’ (played by Amol Gupte) threaten Guruji’s aim of creating a corrupt-free system. The film follows how Bajirao Singham and the police force fight for justice with honesty and bravery.
Although Singham Returns is an out-and-out Bollywood potboiler, Rohit Shetty tries to lay out certain social issues in this film. He highlights corruption, poverty and superstitions, without getting too slanted. It is a commendable attempt by a director who also gave us slapstick comedies like Chennai Express, Bol Bachchan and the Golmaal franchise.
The first-half of the film is engaging and well-paced. Even though the story is quite predictable, you will not get bored. Amol Gupte, who plays the character of the dharam guru is thoroughly enjoyable. Kareena Kapoor Khan as Avni, does her usual Geet peppiness. After the Box Office bummer Himmatwala, Ajay Devgn is back onscreen with all the power as Bajirao Singham. He gives an intense performance. Yes, we do like Ajay Devgn more as an Action hero. In the second-half of the film, the plot gets a little tedious. Thanks to the innumerable slo-mo fight sequences that involve Bajirao Singham. Whenever you think the film is over, it drags on for another ten minutes.
Even with its minor flaws, Singham Returns is a dumdaar film. Ajay Devgn gives a stellar performance once again as the super cop. And very true to his words, he proves it once again that:
Jisme hai dum … to fakht Bajirao Singham
Why should you watch the film?
Bajirao Singham. If you love masala movies, Singham Returns makes for a perfect watch over this long weekend. There is Comedy, Action, dialoguebaazi and yes, Dayashankar of CID. Watch out for the part when Bajirao Singham shouts out "Daya darwaza tod do".
