Review: Punjabi song in the background, a sardaar bashing up goons. Guest appearance by a superstar who bashes up more goons. The sardaar goes back to his village, gets caught in family feud. Some nach gana, romance and more goon-bashing. It’s a no-brainer. There is nothing more to it. Typical dishoom dishoom, song and dance, cheesy dialogue-baji etc. No plot, flimsy story, wafer-thin screenplay, OTT (over the top) acting- the usual fanfare. All these ingredients are present in most Bollywood masala flicks. But there are rare cases like a Dabaang or a Singham that have a little extra boom to keep you hooked.
Son Of Sardaar, however, doesn’t even try. It just banks on the fact that it’s got some big stars. Ajay Devgn does his best to salvage a bad script. Sanjay Dutt plays his part in the OTT role. Sonakshi Sinha is now type-caste as the masala entertainment heroine. She hasn’t done anything non-Dabaangish since her 2011 debut. Juhi Chawla is still a delight, even in a small role. Overall, the makers simply decided to put a whole lot of money into some big stars performing what their idea of a blockbuster is – a funny sardaar revenge story. Sadly, they were wrong. It lacks soul. The movie is far too frivolous even for a Bollywood comedy.
Verdict: Nothing original. Typical Bollywood action masala. No brainer
