Sons Of Ram: Movie Review

Review: It’s been raining mythological films this year. Smart alecs, they released a film around Diwali, knowing it would draw the big Indian family to multiplexes in tow with dada dadi, chacha, chachi, et all. However, there’s one problem, this film is not for children below 8.

Most of us are familiar with the Ramayana but very little is known about Luv and Kush  – Ram’s sons. Ram is oblivious to Sita’s existence and is contemplating remarrying for the Ashvamedh Yagya. While in Guru Valmiki’s ashram, Sita lives as Vandevi and is raising her children. Her sons have been raised to idolize Ram but little do they know he’s their father. Sons Of Ram traces their journey to Ayodhya and how the little duo fights Ram’s army.

This film has absolutely everything going for it but in order for it to be appreciated and understood, it requires one to acknowledge it for the literary masterpiece it is. There are certain scenes that will scare little kids, especially the one where Sita goes back to the earth. Cinema for children should ideally be lighthearted and have a happy ending. Sons Of Ram has a few laughs but in general it is a serious affair. Mythology being partly fictional, children will be left wondering.

Being Amar Chitra Katha’s (ACK) first film, the film will certainly manage living up to people’s expectations. ACK known for their simplistic storytelling style will even resonate with those who haven’t read the books. Another factor that sets this film apart is it’s simplicity.  While the film may be animated and in 3D, the characters have been depicted as humanly as possible.

Even the songs sung by Sunidhi Chauhan who’s lent her voice to Sita, don’t feel like they have been unnecessarily inserted. The film’s editing makes you forget it’s a 120 film. The film’s only drawback is the fact that it’s in 3D which honestly isn’t required and stylistically doesn’t go well with Amar Chitra Katha tales.

As a whole, the film is a wonderful effort by ACK Animation Studios and definitely worth your time! You won’t regret seeing this one, it is truly a family affair and will bring back childhood memories, spent reading an ACK comic inside your textbook!

Verdict: Amar Chitra Katha fans won’t be disappointed.
