Sound Check: Hamari Adhuri Kahani

Rating: ★★★1/2

Verdict: Lyrics gratifies compositions. Compositions echo the principle sentiments of love-loss-liberation. The music of this incomplete love story comes full circle with sonorous voices and words.

…Doliyan hai saji, Khushbuein har kahin, Padhne aya khuda khud yahan, Hamari Adhuri Kahani. These lines from the title track of the film capture the listener’s mood followed by more soul stirring lyrics. Arijit Singh’s charisma is a statement with no counter opinion, but noteworthy in this song is the background music, part of which has a track of train sounds beautifully layered. The song has emotion that is subtly throat choking as melody takes over.

Music director Jeet Ganguly sings an encore version of Hamari Adhuri Kahani. Apart from the shift in the singer’s voice, the form and structure remain same. Depth of field is a term associated with cinema to emphasize the three dimensional positioning of foreground and background objects on two dimensional screens. This song establishes a near similar phenomenon in terms of bringing the listener very close with the emotional beats and then distancing them away.

Papon known for a resonating voice is a display of nurtured talent in Humnava. The songs from this album are linked by a commonality. They are threaded by melancholic mood that only ages and gets better. Yeh Kaisi Jagah is the less favored sound of music from HAK. Deepali Sathe and Zubeen Garg have pleasing voices and the song has an uplifting melody. But however the track scores low as compared to the remainder album.

Kunaal Verma’s writing for Hasi is rich and thoughtful. Ami Mishra and Shreya Ghoshal do the male and female versions of this song respectively. Ami Mishra’s newfangled voice is sure to stay for long in the music industry. Shreya Ghoshal as always is firmly melodious in Hasi which is a happy spirited romantic song. Hasi however is paced down in the female version unlike Mishra’s rendition, and hence here there is more to look forward than just variation in singers.

Rashmi Singh, Virag Mishra, Sayeed Quadri and Kunaal Verma flourish fully as potent lyricists. The album is slightly overpriced at Rs. 175 but does not disappoint. The music of Hamari Adhuri Kahani is an ode to the aging and maturing face of love and loss that tags along. This album will be remembered as one of 2015’s best offering.
