Last Look: India’s Tour Of England, 2014

It was an impossibly long tour that ended bitterly for an Indian team that overdosed on confidence in limited-overs cricket. That their captain Dhoni had a final say during the solitary T20 loss to an inferior English team, is appropriate—considering how mercurial and bittersweet this tour has been for him.

He became India’s most successful ODI captain—reaching 91 ODI wins at a better percentage than any Indian captain—but also became the captain with most overseas test losses to his name. The sole T20 wasn’t much to write home about either, with a foolhardy gamble and lack of confidence in Rayadu, costing his team dear even in the role he revels in: as a finisher par excellence. He failed to score 17 off the final over by Woakes, and mishit most of them, letting his team down in a final act of delusion that may have opened the eyes of even his most ardent fans.
Here is the tour in facts and numbers for those who lived past the test series:
  • England won the test series 3-1 after losing the second test at Lords. India won the ODI series 3-1, with incoming Raina adjudged Man Of The Series. England won the sole T20, thereby finishing the tour as the team with greater boasting rights. It wasn’t a happy one for Captain Cook though, who isn’t even part of the T20 team, and might find himself out of the ODI team pretty soon.
  • Till the sole T20, Kohli had failed to score a half century on the tour. He had gone 16 international innings without one—even the ODI series—which has considerably reduced his fearsome reputation for most touring teams now.
  • Root and Ballance finished the tests with more than 500 runs to their names, while Vijay was the only Indian that crossed 400 for the 5-test series. Sachin Tendulkar, in his entire career, hadn’t scored 500 runs in a test series of any length.
  • England’s second highest wicket taker of the Test series was ‘part-timer’ Moeen Ali with 19 wickets—the same number that India’s Bhuvaneshwar Kumar managed as the highest for his team. Anderson was far ahead with 25 wickets.
  • In a relatively low-scoring ODI series, Rahane was top scorer out of both teams with 193 runs in 4 innings. Root was again at the top for his team with 163 (thanks to the dead-rubber century)
  • India’s Shami topped the bowling charts with 8 wickets, with spin-twins Ashwin and Jadeja redeeming themselves in ODI cricket following at 7 wickets. England’s Woakes was the highest for his team with a paltry 5 wickets—one more than part-timer and MoS Raina.
  • Both series—test and ODIs—were lopsided. England dominated the tests after Lords, and India dominated the ODIs. The sole T20 was even, aside from Dhoni’s harebrained strategy in the end.
  • Rayadu scored 2 half centuries in the ODI series at no. 4, and could be chosen over Rohit in ODIs for the Australia series. Rahane followed his century with a duck, thereby still leaving a question mark over his temperament.
  • Cook ended the tour without a century to his name.
  • Vijay’s 146 at Nottingham was one of only two Indian centuries in the test series. Rahane’s Lords 103 was the second.
  • Ballance and Root scored two centuries each in the test series, with Bell being the only other England centurion (163)
  • Ishant’s 7-74 was the best bowling figures of the test series.
  • Only once did a team go past 300 in the ODI series, at Cardiff, with India’s 304 to England’s paltry 161.
  • Dhoni has now lost overseas test series to New Zealand, South Africa, England (twice and once at Home) and Australia. He has Home Series wins against West Indies (twice), Australia (thrice), Sri Lanka (twice), New Zealand and England.
  • India didn’t lose for 11 tests once Dhoni took over full-time test captaincy in 2008, until the 12th against South Africa at Nagpur. The loss at the Oval was Dhoni’s 14th in overseas tests—all of which have come between 2011-2014.
  • This was India’s first bilateral series win over England in England since 1986.

  • England have won 5 out of their 8 T20s against India.
