“He was batting in my backyard the other day against my boy. I said to my boy, ‘In 10 years’ time you’re going to appreciate how good this experience was’.”

When your captain has such high regard for you, you know you’re on the right track. Kane Williamson has not just impressed Brendon McCullum or his teammates, but pretty much everyone who has followed New Zealand’s recent transition closely. In the past two years, the 24-year-old has had a phenomenal run across formats and continues to be in top form. The timing is just about right. New Zealand now needs a World Cup win more than ever, and Williamson could well be its x-factor.

It is no surprise then, that former Kiwi cricketer Martin Crowe describes Williamson as “New Zealand’s greatest ever batsman”. Passionate, level-headed and hardworking, Kane has his roots firmly grounded and showcases immense focus and poise. His scores on the board may have put him in the spotlight time and again, but he’d rather pass on the accolades to his team. Team man, they say.

Statistically speaking, Williamson currently ranks #6 amongst the world’s best batsmen in ODI and Test cricket. He has also become New Zealand’s fastest batsman to reach 3000 runs. 112, 103, 242, 123 – these are not just numbers, but some of his greatest innings in a career that has only begun to flourish. At 24, he already has a total of 15 international centuries and an incredible 40-plus average in both Tests and ODIs. And 2015 kick-started on an even better note, with 700 plus runs in just 8 games at a mind-boggling average of 102.57. One can imagine the kind of expectations this young lad carries on his shoulders at such a tender age.
Williamson‘s supremely consistent form can do wonders for the Black Caps in the upcoming World Cup. Add to it New Zealand’s quality cricket over the last few months and they’re set for their best shot at the elusive cup. Whether the Kiwis win or not, as long as KaneWilliamson is around, they’re doing alright!
