Wimbledon 2017: The Best Statistics

The All England Club is already busy hosting the most famous tennis tournament in the world. Most of the first-round matches are done, and there have been no major upsets, except the exit of an injured Stan Wawrinka to next-gen star, Daniil Medvedev. The 21-year-old won his first-ever Grand Slam match in four sets against the World no. 3 and reigning US Open Champion. Another minor upset was the defeat of Frenchman Richard Gasquet by the ever-fit David Ferrer. The Spaniard is known to be less of a grass-court player. Both the Australian wild children – Bernard Tomic and Nick Kyrgios – find themselves out of the tournament again in contrasting styles. Tomic “got bored” while losing to his opponent in straight sets, while Kyrgios’s hip injury from the clay season hasn’t healed.

In the meantime, here are some special Wimbledon numbers:

13 – Number of pro years it has taken Japanese journeyman Yuichi Sugita to win his first ever Grand Slam match. Aged 28, he won his first round on Tuesday. He is ranked at 44 – his highest ever – and has also won his first ever ATP tournament at Antalya last week.

85 – Record number of singles match wins for Roger Federer at Wimbledon, after his opponent Alexandr Dolgopolov retired in the first round after one set. He beat Jimmy Connors’ record of 84.
