Stanley Kubrick’s Movies We Wish Were Remade In Bollywood

Cinephiles will remember him as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. Stanley Kubrick was known for his unique cinematography and keen attention to detail. His filmography, albeit short, includes some of the best movies of all time, resplendent with dark humor and realism – something you do not see in a typical Bollywood film. Kubrick’s extensive set designs and skillful use of music has set a benchmark in filmmaking, which would be very difficult to replicate in Bollywood. Even then, his film The Killing was adapted by Sriram Raghavan to make Johnny Gaddaar. Neither of the films faired greatly at the box office, but garnered critical acclaim by critics.

In honor of the legendary filmmaker’s birth anniversary, we bring you five of his best films, which should be attempted by Bollywood filmmakers.

A Clockwork Orange
Kubrick’s dystopian crime thriller on a sociopathic delinquent is probably his most famous movie of all time. We can’t help but notice how similar Malcolm McDowell’s character is to the character of Ramanna from the recently released Raman Raghav 2.0. So, if an Indian version of the movie had to be made, Nawazuddin Siddiqui is definitely leading the race to play Alex.

Spartacus
Based on the story of the leader of the Third Servile War, the movie starred Kirk Douglas as Spartacus, the gladiator and leader of the revolution. After the success of recent release Sultan, Salman Khan has proved that he would be the ideal actor to take on that role in an Indian adaptation. After all, Spartacus’ attempt to take over the Roman Empire is nothing compared to Bhai’s takeover of Bollywood.

Lolita
Kubrick’s black comedy-drama film involved the relationship of a middle-aged man with a teenage girl. A similar plot was used in Nishabd, which starred Amitabh Bachchan and Jiah Khan. There’s no doubt that Big B would be the guy to play the role of Humbert, should an Indian adaptation be made.

The Shining
This psychological horror film has been one of the greatest horror films ever made. It stars Jack Nicholson in the lead role, as Jack Torrance, a recovering alcoholic and caretaker of an isolated haunted hotel. Nicholson’s gradual mania leads him to attack his own wife and son.  Shahid Kapoor is the ideal choice for this role, after his convincing performance in Haider.

Barry Lyndon
This period drama followed the journey of a young farm boy, from teenage heartbreak to revenge to finally assuming an aristocratic position by marrying a rich widow. His struggle throughout his life to finally become a power lord makes this a perfect Shah Rukh Khan film, should an Indian adaptation be created.
