He made his debut with Footpath (2003); she made her’s with Dev D (2009). They both appeared together in the political thriller, Shanghai (2012). However, this week, the two are contending at the box office with their respective releases. The internationally acclaimed Margarita With A Straw and the highly anticipated sci-fi thriller, Mr. X is all set to hit the theatres this week. With Kalki Koechlin and Emraan Hashmi appearing in never-seen-before roles, they are indeed our stars of the week. Famous in their own rights, Kalki and Emraan have gradually yet successfully carved their niche in the Hindi film industry.
Kalki, who started her career with theatre, was born in Puducherry and has a French lineage. The actress was written off for her looks and considered an outsider by the industry. However, she took all criticism in her stride and established herself as one of the best talents in Bollywood. Popularly known for her roles in indie or unconventional films, Kalki believes in breaking stereotypes. Whether in concern to her personal or professional life, she has been very vocal about her opinions.
Though the actress is slowly entering the space of mainstream cinema, she continues to enjoy theatre and has delivered some brilliant acts. Remember her monologue on Draupadi? The act went viral and was applauded by viewers and critics alike. Moreover, with films like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), Girl in Yellow Boots (2011) and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) to her credit, the actress is now all set to appear as a young woman suffering with cerebral palsy, in Margarita With A Straw. The film has already won awards at Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival and 39th Toronto International Film Festival. Yes, we are definitely waiting to watch this one on-screen!
Emraan on the other hand had Bollywood connections, with his uncle being the famed-director, Mahesh Bhatt. The actor who is labelled as the serial-kisser of Bollywood, initially worked as an assistant director for Raaz (2002). However, post his debut Emraan was seen in a series of similar roles until recent years, when he decided to step out of his comfort zone. With his recent releases such as Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai (2010), The Dirty Picture (2011) and Ungli (2014) establishing him as one of the A-listers, Emraan has definitely come a long way. In his next release, Mr. X, the actor will be seen playing a vigilante with superpowers. The film promises some remarkable CGI effects and thrills. Hoping this sci-fi thriller works its wonders!
