Comedian Hasan Minhaj returns with the sixth volume of his weekly Patriot Act series. Like always, the show takes a humorous yet incisive look at topical issues. This season is no different. Here’s what you can expect from the first episode, titled What Happens If You Can’t Pay Rent.

The quarantine edition

The episode is filmed by Minhaj in his home, and he initially appears on screen wearing a mask. He quickly pulls off the mask, murmuring how difficult it is to talk with it on. He talks about how the pandemic has us looking super shady with our masks and how we’ve diligently been “FaceTiming the neck fat of our loved ones”. He also expresses concern about how Skype “dropped the ball” and let Zoom swoop in.

Unemployment is on the rise

A graph pops up behind Minhaj, showing viewers that the rate of unemployment is moving steadily upwards in America. Because people are losing their jobs, they barely have enough to pay for basic essentials. So, how on earth are they going to pay their rent?

‘Shelter in place’… but how?

Minhaj talks about how “shelter in place” is all the rage on the news these days. But to shelter in place, he fairly points out that you ‘‘need a shelter’’ in the first place. He discusses the renters vs homeowners debate, going on to say that renters are a lot more vulnerable today.

Landlords are lording it over tenants

There are different types of landlords. And there are different types of tenants. Minhaj gives viewers examples of both, all of which are funny, some are downright shocking.

Minhaj is top-notch as always and cleverly addresses an issue that’s worrying America and the world at large.
