If crime dramas are your thing, then this one is unmissable. Easily one the best of shows available on Hotstar Premium, Jett deserves your attention for the dynamite that is Carla Gugino.
Made by Cinemax and streaming on Hotstar Premium in India, Jett is the story of Daisy ‘Jett’ Kowalski (Gugino), a world-class thief who has recently been released from prison, and the drama that revolves around her returning to the world of crime and crossing lines with eccentric crime lords.
Jett is a strong contender for one of the best shows to debut this year, and is as underrated as its cast members. Sebastian Gutierrez, the series creator, ought to take a bow for the lens through which he’s portrayed seduction, sex and nudity. For instance, in one of the episodes, Daisy and crime lord Charlie Baudelaire (Giancarlo Esposito) are relaxing in a penthouse suite post a round of debauchery. They play a nice record, eat breakfast off each other and even have deep conversations about their insecurities all the while being naked, but not for the camera. Nudity, when used, comes off as classy and sex is teased more than shown.
In another universe, Carla Gugino (Gerald’s Game, Watchmen) and Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) would have been household names for the brilliant actors they are, yet somehow one feels they have been robbed of recognition until you come across them in Jett.
On the story front, we follow Daisy, fresh out of prison, raising her daughter with a mysterious woman, Maria (Elena Anaya) and doing odd jobs in the business & pleasure sectors for Charlie. One such job goes wrong, another crime lord gets involved and we get introduced to the ugly side of crime. With vengeance as the center point, there are scores that need settling, places that need to be robbed, people that need to be killed and in the middle of it all, is Daisy. She’s smart and plays her cards well, even when caught in the crossfire. Daisy plans well but doesn’t stutter when caught off guard, be it hiding a bullet wound from her daughter or being held at gunpoint by the mob boss; she’s calm, collective and stylish at all times.
Apart from Carla Gugino’s performance, the terrific writing and direction of Sebastian Gutierrez deserve a mention. From the introduction of the characters to tense action-packed sequences, he’s managed to maintain a slick tempo throughout the season.
