HBO recently released the trailer of its six-part docu-series based on McDonald’s Monopoly scandal. From 1987 to 2001, McDonald’s in the US ran Monopoly, a game in which customers collected game pieces with which they could win anything from free McDonald’s food to $1 million. For 12 years, however, the game was rigged by former cop turned security auditor, Jerome ‘Uncle Jerry’ Jacobson, who sold people the pieces. It was a $24 million scam.

The series is based on a 2018 article published in Daily Beast. In the trailer, we see a few of the individuals who were interviewed for the series: FBI agents, whose initial reaction to the news of the scam was one of incredulity; people from McDonald’s and those who bought the game pieces from Uncle Jerry. They were ordinary folk who “wanted a better life” and thought this was an easy ticket.

The docu-series premieres on Hotstar on Tuesday, February 4.
