Verdict: Zach Galifianakis’ deadpan delivery packs a lot of big laughs.
You can stream this on Netflix.
Co-founder Will Ferrell’s Funny or Die has brought plenty of comedy gold to internet audiences including the Emmy award-winning web series Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis. Set up like an amateur interview with not-so-amateur celebrities, the show features poker-faced host Zach Galifianakis delivering burning questions that are more like hilariously insulting burns. But after interviewing everyone from Brad Pitt and Justin Beiber to Barack Obama, in Galifianakis’ own words, the show had “kind of run its course.” What was the next step? A full-fledged Netflix movie, of course.
What’s Between Two Ferns: The Movie About:
The host we all love to laugh at and not with, Zach Galifianakis dreams of something bigger than his web show Between Two Ferns. Funny Or Die executive Will Ferrell recognizes his potential to attract views and agrees to help him get his own primetime television talk show. However, that’s not going to come easy because Galifianakis needs to deliver 10 hilarious episodes to make his dreams come true. That’s when his crew of assistant Carol (Lauren Lapkus), cameraman Cam (Ryan Gaul), and sound lady Boom Boom (Jiavani Linayao) join him on a road trip to find and interview a series of high-profile celebrities.
Apart from reuniting us with the snarky host and his show’s eponymous bushes, director Scott Aukerman extends the sketch of Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis into a ridiculous mockumentary. Between Two Ferns: The Movie is a typical road-trip comedy complete with an eccentric group of people and moments of hopelessness that end with our characters finding themselves along the way. It’s all a bit cliche but that doesn’t mean we don’t get what we really came for – squirming celebs being put in the hot seat as they’re dissed by the rudest interviewer ever. Starting off with an interview with Matthew McConaughey that escalates way too quickly, we’re treated to a whole slew of painfully awkward but equally hilarious celeb sit-downs throughout the course of the film. From multiple digs at David Letterman’s beard to questioning Paul Rudd’s Jewish-ness, they’re all packed with enough punches to make you crack up. The interview outtakes in the film’s end credits made us wish we got some more of that and less of the story-building. Shoved inside a garden-variety comedy adventure, Between Two Ferns: The Movie will treat you to quite a few belly laughs.
What Could’ve Been Better:
The film wastes a lot of precious screen time on an unwarranted plot that could’ve been better filled with more hilarious quips. It builds up Galifianakis as this loser looking for fame when what made the web series so fun was his nonchalant uppityness as he delivered those hilarious insults.
Why You Should Watch:
It is full of quippy insults and impressively hilarious one-liners that’ll make you burst into laughter and, for that, Between Two Ferns: The Movie is worth the watch.
