Five years after it premiered on stage in the US, Hamilton: An American Musical is finally available to watch online for the rest of the world. This show garnered attention back in 2015 with positive reviews and high box office sales. Hamilton is inspired by the 2004 biography ‘Alexander Hamilton’ by Ron Chernow, which explores the legacy of one of America’s Founding Fathers. The modern musical tribute is written by Lin Manuel Miranda, who also essays the titular character.
Act I takes place in the pre-Independence era wherein Alexander Hamilton fights and wins many battles alongside his comrades Aaron Burr (Leslie Odom Jr.), Marquis de Lafayette (Daveed Diggs), John Laurens (Anthony Ramos), and Hercules Mulligan (Okieriete Onaodowan). He meets the Schuyler sisters Angelica (Renée Elise Goldsberry), Eliza (Phillipa Soo) and Peggy (Jasmine Cephas Jones), eventually marrying Eliza. His commander George Washington (Christopher Jackson) goes on to become the first President and Hamilton is his Treasury.
Act II focusses on Washington’s government, as Thomas Jefferson (Daveed Diggs) returns from France. With James Madison (Okieriete Onaodowan) on his side, he proves to be a bitter rival to Hamilton. We are later also introduced to Hamilton’s son Philip (Anthony Ramos) and his affair with Maria Reynolds (Jasmine Cephas Jones), the latter of which ruins his chances of becoming President.
We get the front-row seat to where it happens
Hamilton is a musical tribute to its nation’s history. We get to watch the American Revolution and experience the bravery of the people who finally won their Independence, inspiring the freedom struggle in many more parts of the world. There might be some historical inaccuracies and omissions of slavery or the Native American genocide but focusses more on Hamilton’s positive side. Even though it has been five years since the musical first premiered and most of its hype has died down since, Disney could’ve not chosen a better time to release the live stage production recording, just one day before the US Independence Day.
Lin-Manuel Miranda does not throw away his shot
Miranda is certainly the star of the show and he steals the spotlight in his portrayal of Alexander Hamilton. His camaraderie and rivalry with Daveed Diggs’ Lafayette and Jefferson respectively make for some of the best numbers on the show. Diggs is hands down the best version we might ever see of America’s third President and his rap battles are the crème the la crème of the musical. Leslie Odom Jr. is superb as the cold and calculative Burr, while Renée Elise Goldsberry delivers a fantastic solo with her powerful voice.
The overall spectacle blows us all away
One of the best and most unique things about this musical is how it borrows from modern hip-hop, rap, pop, and R&B for its numbers. The show also casts black actors in traditionally white roles. When it comes to representation, Hamilton as a musical does a lot more than what the Founding Fathers did for its non-white populace. Add that to the stunning musical numbers, brilliant choreography, and fantastic performances and you will have a grand time watching this spectacular show.
WATCH OR NOT:
You can’t say ‘no’ to this! If you are a fan of musicals, you simply cannot miss this stunning production. Even lovers of hip-hop and R&B will enjoy its musical numbers. We rarely get to see Broadway-worthy productions in our country, so catch it online while you can.
