Horror television has been on an upswing for quite a while now with shows like The Haunting of Bly Manor providing a creepy gothic romance and Lovecraft Country, a love letter to the lore created by horror author H.P. Lovecraft. As we draw closer to Halloween let’s take a look at some of the scariest scenes from TV’s best horror shows.

The Basement in ‘The Haunting Of Hill House’ (Episode 3)

Luke Crain was sweet and innocent as a child, but the things that happened to him at Hill House, his childhood home sent him into an adulthood fraught with PTSD and drug addiction. Possibly his most traumatic was when he got stuck in the basement while playing in the dumbwaiter and was attacked by a rotting corpse ghost. The little boy’s terrified screams probably stuck with his sister, Theo, as there was nothing she could do to help her little brother.

R-U-N in ‘Stranger Things’ (Season 1, Episode 3)

Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) had a lot to deal with in the first season of Stranger Things. Her son Will disappeared into the world of the Upside Down and the rest of the town of Hawkins thought she was insane. She finally managed to communicate with him using Christmas lights and an alphabet on the wall. The boy could turn on lights corresponding to letters in order to send his mother messages from the other world where he was trapped. The relief of finally being able to contact Will turned to abject terror when he lit up the letters “R-U-N”.

School Shooting in ‘American Horror Story’ (Season 1, multiple episodes)

American Horror Story is a series that’s chock full of scares and shocking moments. However, when they showed a school shooting perpetrated by character Tate Langdon in season one, the show reminded viewers that the real horrors are those that exist in real life. Massacres like Columbine cannot be dismissed as mere fantasy like ghouls and ghosts.
