Netflix’s Valentine’s Day offering is Taj Mahal 1989, a profile of four couples of varying ages living in Lucknow in that year. Each is going through trying times in the departments of love and sex. In the trailer, the characters break the fourth wall to meditate on love. For instance, a young university student says that back in 1989, long before Tinder had been conceived, dating meant making do with people around you.
The trailer opens with a young girl busting the myth that women are interested in marriage while men care about sex. While two of the couples are college kids, the other two are older. Geetanjali Kulkarni and Neeraj Kabi play a middle-aged couple. So frustrated is she at being in a marriage without romance, she suggests divorce. Danish Husain and Sheeba Chaddha play a happier couple. But all is not well between them either. The feisty women characters and frank talk about sex suggest that the makers of Taj Mahal 1989 want to present an unabashedly truthful view of desire, one that’s lacking in popular culture.
