The trailer of Martin Scorsese’s crime epic, The Irishman, was released by Netflix last night. The drama stars the director’s frequent collaborators Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, both of whom acted in Scorsese’s Raging Bull (1980), The Goodfellas (1990) and Casino (1995). Pesci reportedly came out of retirement for his turn in the movie. The film also stars Al Pacino, whose pairing with De Niro after The Godfather is always a cause for excitement, as well as Ray Romano, Bobby Cannavale and Anna Paquin.
The drama is based on Charles Brandt’s 2004 non-fiction book I Hear You Paint Houses. It follows Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro), a veteran of World War II and a hitman for the Bufalino crime family, who was involved in the mysterious disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino), a labour union leader, in 1975. In the trailer one can see the extensive work done to make the stars look decades younger.
The Irishman is slated to premiere at the New York Film Festival in September and will stream on Netflix thereafter.
