We’ve already seen Jack’s (Kate and Toby’s son) rise as an acclaimed musician. In this episode, we’re shown that his journey didn’t quite begin on a high note. Baby Jack didn’t enjoy the first music class he was taken to as a kid.

Meanwhile, Kevin (Justin Hartley) is trying his best to bond with his uncle Nicky (Griffin Dunne). Cassidy (Jennifer Morrison), Nicky and Kevin end up spending the day together and bond over intimate details from their pasts. Kevin buys a trailer for himself and parks it right next to Nicky’s in the hope of enjoying his company.

Flashback to the past: Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Kate are living in an apartment trying to cope with Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) death, while Kevin and Randall (Sterling K Brown) are off to college. Rebecca visits Randall in college and meets her future daughter-in-law, Beth (Rachel Hilson) and her formidable mother, Carol (Phylicia Rashad). Rebecca and Carol find common ground; they’ve both lost a loved one. Carol’s wise words to Rebecca prompt her to take control of her life.

Beth and Randall’s (a terrific Niles Fitch) blossoming adoration has the make of a grand love story. Randall and Carol share a rather icy relationship, that seems to thaw as the episode ends.

Kevin learns that his debut show, ‘The Manny’ has been discontinued and relives his first day on set. Although Cassidy dismisses it as a silly obsession, his account of how the show came to be a success makes her empathetic towards him.

Rebecca and Kate decide to move out of their dingy apartment and give life another shot. Their tender mother-daughter moment is marred when they receive a call from teenage Kevin, who has just married his high school sweetheart.
