Women have secured an important place in the Indian film industry in the past few years. Gone are the days when the female lead only played the damsel in distress, waiting for the hero to rescue her from villainous brutes. Women in Bollywood are now proving to be just as competent as men, if not better, performing important roles and daring stunts. Female lead characters are becoming a norm in mainstream Bollywood. The turn of the decade also saw the rise of some fantastic female talent in Bollywood such as Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra, Vidya Balan, Kangana Ranaut, Anushka Sharma and more, some of whom have moved on to star in Hollywood movies and TV shows.
1. Gulaab Gang
Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla returned to the big screen in this crime-drama film. In this film about a group of female vigilantes tackling women’s issues, both Madhuri and Juhi gave stellar performances, yet the movie flopped at the box office.
2. Mary Kom
Can a Priyanka Chopra-starrer go wrong? History says it can, but this biopic portrayed PeeCee in one of her best roles. The story also proved that boxing is not just for men.
Size doesn’t matter! The tiny Rani Mukerji plays a brave policewoman who uncovers the human-trafficking business of the mafia. Needless to say, she outdid herself in the movie and even won a Stardust Award for her role.
4. Angry Indian Goddesses
Do not be led away by the title. This movie celebrated the friendship and close bond between a group of women, while discussing women’s issues in India. The movie was delightful and its women, brave and uninhibited.
The thriller starred Anushka Sharma and Neil Bhoopalam in lead roles, but there was no doubt who the real star of the movie was. Anushka Sharma‘s performance gained critical acclaim and the movie was a hit.
6. Revolver Rani
Kangana Ranaut plays the fiery leader of a political party, who goes on to save her man from the bad guys. Talk about the reversal of roles! However, the movie was a box office flop.
Another Kangana-starrer, Queen was a delightful watch for all kinds of movie-goers. The movie did wonders at the box office and Kangana bagged the Filmfare Award for her role.
Bollywood needs more biopics on inspiring Indian women. The Sonam Kapoor-starrer has received positive reviews and critical appreciation already.

This upcoming movie stars Priyanka Chopra in the lead role. We can’t wait for PeeCee to sweep us off our feet with another killer performance.
