The successful films of 2013

The month is December and the year is coming to its end. By far, this has been a very good year at the Box Office for Hindi movies. Couple of films were major hits and did extremely good business. The coveted 100-Crore Club saw a decent number of entrants and two to three films even reached the bracket of 200 crores and more. The successful business of various films ensured that the film industry remains stable and a frequent number of films get produced every next year. Also, the business of these movies refer to the fact that the audience really appreciated the diversity of subjects on which the films were made. From biographies to romance and from sci-fi to political-thrillers, movies clicked with the audience in a major way this year. As the year is nearing its end, this seems perfect to take a look back at those movies which were big hits of 2013.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag: The biopic based on the life of Jeev Milkha Singh instantaneously found a connect with the audience and became a successful movie, eventually doing 100-crore business. Masterful direction by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and brilliant acting performance by Farhan Akhtar, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is the story of hope, struggle and glory.

Aashiqui 2: The sequel to the 1990 superhit-musical Aashiqui, this film was a heartfelt romance between two music artists and features some really wonderful songs. Aashiqui 2 featured two new actors, yet it managed to find its place in the heart of Indian film-lovers. And yes, the first film from Vishesh films to get an entry in the 100-crore club.

Raanjhanaa: The second film from Anand Rai, who arrived on the Indian film scene with the brilliant Tanu weds Manu, was one of the sleeper hits of 2013. It marked the debut of South actor Dhanush in Bollywood and went on to become a big hit this year.

Chennai Express: Shahrukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and Rohit Shetty. Seems that Chennai Express was destined to become a major hit, but exceeded all expectations by becoming the biggest hit of the year. It entertained the audience greatly and registered more than 300 crores at the Box Office. Another major hit from Rohit Shetty.

Madras Cafe: Shoojit Sircar (of Vicky Donor fame) directed this political-thriller with much elan. John Abraham played the role of an intelligence officer in this movie. It was also appreciated by the audience and did decent business at the Box Office. Madras Cafe is not the regular Bollywood movie, but an intelligent movie, made in world cinema fashion. This is certainly a political-thriller well made.

There are other Indian films such as Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Krrish 3 and Lunch Box, which were both appreciated by the audience and did decent business in varying degrees. On the whole, it was a satisfying and rewarding year in terms of business and entertainment. Still, Dhoom 3 is slated to release in December and expected to be a big hit which would subsequently mark the end of this year on a very successful note. As this year is coming to its end, it is now time that we look forward to 2014 with hope and expectations that it turns out to be another good year for the movies. Well, every movie-lover would want so!
