The road to success is full of failures. Many Bollywood stars will vouch for that. Even the best actors and actresses have to struggle hard in this grueling industry. Many give up, some pursue long enough to become huge stars, while others keep struggling for life. In fact, some of the most of the successful stars in the film industry today have had flopped debuts. Being a ‘Kapoor’, ‘Khan’, or a ‘Bachchan’ meant nothing in Bollywood then. These stars have overcome failures to turn their names into brands. Let’s take a look at the top actors of Bollywood who began with on a failed note:
One of the most significant names if not the most significant in Bollywood, Big B has enjoyed stardom since the 70s. But success was not handed to him on a silver platter. His first film, Saat Hindustani, flopped at the box-office, followed by many more. His golden period began in 1973, with the action film Zanjeer. For 14 straight years since, Amitabh has starred in at least one hit film per year.
Amitabh’s contemporary Rekha began her career way before him. In 1966, she was seen in a Telugu film, Rangula Ratnam, when she was merely 12 years old. The film flopped, and Rekha was not seen on screen till 1969. She appeared in movies every year ever since, till 2004. Some of her biggest films of this period are Khubsoorat, Khoon Bhari Maang, Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi and Umrao Jaan.
In today’s times, it’s hard to imagine that a Salman-starrer can flop. Bhailevers must probably be trying to figure out a time machine that will take them back to 1988, so they can make Biwi Ho Toh Aisi another superhit Bhai film. Until they manage to do that (we very much doubt it), Salman will always be known as the biggest Bollywood star with a failed debut. Sigh! You can’t have it all.
Katrina has been a sensation in Bollywood in the past decade. Filmmakers love to star the actress in their films. She has been relentless and criticism hasn’t let her down. Many do not remember her first film, Boom, which also starred veterans Amitabh Bachchan, Gulshan Grover, and Jackie Shroff. However, this did not stop the film from being a box-office disaster.
Refugee, which starred Bebo and Abhishek Bachchan in their debut roles, won a number of awards, but failed to win the heart of its audience. This did not deter Kareena, who went on to star in a number of hit films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham…, Omkara, Jab We Met, and Bodyguard. Meanwhile Abhishek’s career fizzled out. But we hear his sports team is doing great!
A superstar today, many of you might not remember Shahid’s slow start in Bollywood. He appeared as a background dancer in movies like Dil To Pagal Hai and Taal, but made his big debut with the 2003 coming-of-age romance Ishq Vishk. The film performed averagely in the box office, and Shahid went on to deliver one flop after another. He first tasted success with Vivah, which was his ninth movie.
