Suriya: One Man, Many Dashing Looks

He’s got the looks, he’s got the style and he’s got the X-factor… and that makes him a powerhouse performer. The actor who can endorse all three qualities is a rarity in the Tamil film industry, and this person who manages to strike gold with all these qualities is, Suriya. Over the course of his career, Suriya has played several roles, right from reprising the role of a delinquent to that of a police officer. And he has rocked each one of those looks.  Over a decade-long career, Suriya has kept his style distinct, despite the changing trends. Let’s take a look at some of Suriya’s looks that have created an impact, among the audience.

After repeatedly playing the naïve, boy-next-door right from the beginning of his career (Nerrukku Ner, 1997), the actor went in for a makeover with his film Kaakha Kaakha (2003) in which he played the role of a police officer. Wearing a silver kada, sporting a chevron mustache and looking dapper in a khakhi uniform; Suriya leveled-up the look of the regular cop. After the huge success of the film, several of his contemporaries took quite a few hints from the actor and replicated his style.

One cannot reprise several looks for the same film, unless he is Suriya. Indeed, the actor played the role of a teenage boy, a son and father in the film Varanam Aayiram (2008). The actor, drastically lost weight to fit into the shoes of a teenager, and became skinny to look like an ailing patient. For his third look, he went from being a handsome college-goer, to a guy mourning in love and finally, trimmed himself to suit the role of an Army chief. It was the first time in Tamil cinema, that an actor flaunted six-packs for a film. Needless to say that it became the talk-of-the-town and several of his contemporaries went the macho-way for their films soon after.

2005 saw Suriya treat the audience to something spectacular with, Ghajini. The actor donned a stylish look for his role as, Sanjay Ramasamy and beefed-up his muscles to play the role of a guy suffering from short-term memory loss. It is evident that the actor’s dedication and commitment upped the quotient of the film.

In 2010, Suriya treated his fans to some high-octane entertainment by playing the role of a police officer, again. Singam starred the handsome actor as a no-nonsense cop, who battled the criminals of the society. But his look in Singam was different from the one he sported in Kaakha Kaakha; it had its own twist. Apart from looking dapper in his khakhi uniform, the actor sported a horseshoe mustache. The look instantly became a rage and added a distinct element to the role.

Move over uninteresting goons, we have a stylish gangster in town! And his name is Raju Bhai. Outfitted in v-neck tees, dark-colored jackets, gel-styled hair, Raju Bhai is the rugged-yet-stylish don. Not to forget the amazing sunnies he sports in the teaser of the film. Rumor has it that the actor will sport another look in the film.  Well… let’s wait and watch if the official trailer will create an impact as the first one. We will get to see his fresh avatar when the film releases (August 15th). Until then… let’s gasp and fantasize over this handsome hunk.

Here’s wishing the fabulous actor, the heartthrob of several, a very happy birthday. As his fans say, Suriya is now, 39 years young!
