I have been waiting on for this movie for sometime now. Ever since I saw the first poster. The image of Ender standing in front of the viewing port, framed by the Earth in the background, raised goosebumps. As a geek/nerd worth his salt (rather his geekdom/nerdiness), I had to read up on this phenomenon. I learnt a lot about this movie and the character of Ender.
This movie is based on the first book of the same name. The book, infact, is issued as reading material for the United States Marine Corps, because it showcases ethics, morality and leadership on the battlefield. Written in 1985 by sci-fi author Orson Scott Card, this book spawned a series of books, comics, a video game and now this film.
Directed by Gavin Hood (of X-men origins: Wolverine fame), the film seems to be a visual extravaganza for everyone, not just us geeks. The teaser trailer was shown at the San Diego Comic Con (the largest Comic Book Convention in the world) last year.
The film stars Harrison Ford, Hailee Stienfield, Ben Kingsley with Asa Butterfield as Ender. The trailer showed us what we can expect from this film – from massive battle scenes, aliens, spaceships (cruisers, fighters, heavy destroyers), holographic interfaces and zero gravity battle chambers, there’s so much to look forward to! The idea we get while watching the film’s trailer is that Ender is the chosen one to save mankind from world-destroying aliens. Yes, that has been done before, however you must remember this was a book written in the year 1985, the various inventions we take for granted now were just flights of fantasy. This was during the time when the world got to see mega sci-fi films come to the big screen (Star Wars episodes, Star Trek movies etc.)
All us geeks are looking forward to having our minds blown away. Each and every geek out there wants to save the world. It’s time to take a journey with Ender’s Game.
