Thangamagan: Film Review – A Family Drama to Steal Your Heart

Verdict:  A treat for all Dhanush fans

Tamil cinema is good at producing family dramas that have a good mix of comedy, romance and emotions, without compromising on the entertainment factor. In 2014, director Velraj‘s Velaiilla Pattadhari (VIP) starring Dhanush was a smashing entertainer that worked as a film high on family drama. Now, the duo are back with Thangamagan. While VIP told the story of a youth’s grit and determination to succeed in his professional life,Thangamagan is a tale of a married man and his efforts to resolve a mystery that tore his family apart. Unlike their previous film, Thangamagan rides high on emotional drama,  which will make you both laugh and cry.
No one showcases the life of a middle class family as perfectly as Velraj. He captures their everyday lives, their struggles and puts them together in a movie that spells realism in every frame. The relatable factor about the movie are its characters, who seem perfect for the story.
The title of the film may have been borrowed from an old Rajinikanth’s film, but the plot is fresh. The story gives us a look into teenage and adulthood life of Tamizh (Dhanush). The first-half of the film showcases teenage romance between Tamizh and Hema (Amy Jackson).  The real thrill though lies in the second half of the film. The stunts reveal the heroic avatar of Dhanush. Needless to say that the scenes are sure to receive thundering applause from the audience.
Thangamagan features a mature and stellar performance by Dhanush. He breathes life into his character with his subtle act. Cast in a perfect role, K.SRavikumar‘s performance as the absent-minded father is superb. Although his role is brief, he makes it memorable with his performance. Given the theme, one may feel that Amy Jackson and Samantha are misfits in the film. The notion disappears soon as the movie progresses. In terms of technical values, the cinematography is top notch. Anirudh Ravichandar‘s tunes are hummable. Despite its flaws, which includes a dramatic climax, Thangamagan works.
Why You Should Watch This Movie:
Whether you’re a fan of Dhanush or not, this movie will appeal to you. Watch it for some good performances and an emotionally-gripping story.
