The 5th Wave: Film Review – The Apocalypse Is Near, Yet Again

Verdict: Yet another average sci-fi novel adaptation

The 5th Wave is a sub-par, but worthy adaptation of Rick Yancey’s 2013 novel, The 5th Wave. The film is a mash-up of untimely shots of the apocalyptic waves and Cassie (Chloe Grace Moretz), wandering through the woods with the weight of the world on her shoulders. The producers, Toby Maguire and Graham King, look forward to the production of the other two books in the author’s proposed trilogy, The Infinite Sea and The Last Star, to be published later this year.
The film with a run time of 112 minutes, revolves around Cassie’s mission to rescue her little brother, Sammy (Zackary Arthur). All this against the backdrop of the overall plot of the film – The Waves destroying the human race. The plot is explained in the beginning of the film, with a voice-over by Cassie and the appearance of an alien aircraft in the Ohio sky. The supernatural species are termed as ‘The Others‘, throughout the film. Soon after, the audience is exposed to The First Wave, which is an electromagnetic pulse leading to a worldwide power cut, followed by The Second Wave, earthquakes and a flood of tidal waves smashing into the city of Miami and the London Bridge. The Third Wave, where a bird flu epidemic hits the world and Cassie loses her mother, Lisa Sullivan (Maggie Siff). The Fourth Wave, which takes place when Colonal Vosch (Liev Schreiber) arrives as the U.S. Military and a shooting massacre leads to the death of her father, Oliver Sullivan (Ron Livingston). All of this is shown in a short flashback in the film and rushed through. It’s almost as if the director wanted to get the apocalypse out of the way and get on with the story. A twist in the plot occurs with the emergence of The Fifth Wave, which creates the elements of suspense and anticipation in the mind of the viewer.

The film is driven primarily by Chloe Grace Moretz, who plays the role of the protagonist. She is appeared to experience a transition through the film, from being a young, carefree teen to a desensitized survivor capable of taking a life. In addition to Chloe, the essence of the film is credited to the performances by Evan Walker (Alex Roe) – a good-looking, protective guy, who falls in love with Cassie – and Ben Parish (Nick Robinson) – Cassie’s old crush and leader of the squad of soldiers at the military base. Alex Roe’s character is of the typical and mysterious Robert Pattison-Theo James tradition.
Some of the other characters that add to the essence of the film are Ringer (Maika Monroe) – an emo-eyed, goth teen fighter portrayed as a tough-as-nails, an intimidating Sergeant Reznik (Maria Bello) – a complex character of a soldier, and Dumbo (Tony Revolori) – a fun and harmless addition to the squad of soldiers.
Directed by J Blakeson, The 5th Wave is a film filled with plenty of shooting and a hurried mix-up of the disastrous apocalypse faced by the world. The screenplay, cinematography and visual effects of the film are something to look out for.

Why You Should Watch This Film

For all you Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Divergent and Independence Day fans out there, The 5th Wave is a suitable one-time watch. The visual effects are to look forward to. With two possible sequels lined up in the future, one can hope for a film that is better than average.
