The Blind Side is the true story of American football player, Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) – homeless teenager, dealt the tough cards in life. His sporting talent gets him admission in an elite school despite low grades, after the coach spots him. Written off as dim by the teachers, except one, he is lost in his surroundings.
Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock), whose kids study in the same school, spots him wandering in the cold without even a jacket and takes him into her home. Sandra Bullock portrays the tough-exteriored, kind-hearted, protective mother so flawlessly that you can’t help but fall in love with this lady who even in the absence of background knowledge makes Michael her own.
‘Big Mike’ inherits a father (Tim Mcgraw), a younger brother SJ and a sister, Collins. There is no discrimination of any kind as the family goes all the way in helping Michael earn a football scholarship. As the bonds tighten Michael comes into his own. Leigh Anne’s unconditional love slowly ‘peels the layers off like an onion’ to reveal the pain of his past. She makes an effort to understand him and uses the knowledge of his 98 percentile in protective instincts to train him in football. This finally makes him a valuable player on the team and one who is sought by the best coaches in the country. There is no discrimination of any kind as the family goes all the way in helping Michael earn a football scholarship.
Michael feels completely at home in the new environment. The couple of times he visits the side of Memphis he belongs to, the difference between him and his community is stark. A life of abuse and crime is what many like Michael grow up in. Opportunities for reform are scarce and they are swallowed by the filth. The pain and anger leads to violence and tragic young deaths. Given the chance and backing so many of them can be nurtured like Michael.
Michael Oher holds no grudges in life, he forgets and moves on and this is his biggest strength in turning his life around. Quinton Aaron adds small details in his performance like fidgeting, the lift of an eyebrow, a half smile and by the end of it you want to hug the teddy bear of a guy. The movie is touching and heart warming. Witty humor, well-etched characters and peppy background music keep it upbeat.
To give selflessly is the greatest satisfaction one can feel.
