The Danish Girl: Film Review – A Story of Love and Acceptance

Verdict: Eddie Redmayne shines in this compelling true story.
It's been a good year for LGBT representation in cinema. Films like Boy Meets Girl and Tangerine have proven that filmmakers are no longer afraid of pushing the envelope. And now, Tom Hooper is joining these directors with his latest, The Danish Girl.

The film starts in Copenhagen, where we are introduced to the artist couple, Gerda (Alicia Vikander) and Einar Wegener (Eddie Redmayne). One day, Einar stands in for a model, triggering an identity crisis that sets off a chain of events that eventually leads to his transformation into Lili Elbe. What follows is a riveting true story of love and acceptance that oscillates between heart-breaking and heart-warming.

Though The Danish Girl is the story of an iconic figure in the transgender movement, it is primarily the story of one individual's quest for acceptance. Through Gerda and Lili's journey, it shows us that love and acceptance rarely come without conflict. But it is conflict that makes love worth it, in the end.

Alicia Vikander and Eddie Redmayne are marvelous in their respective parts. Each actor brings an unparalleled depth and likability to their characters, making them worth rooting for. In fact, it's safe to say that both actors deserve accolades for their performances in the film. Supporting actors like Adrian Schiller and Amber Heard also do justice to their respective parts. However, Redmayne and Vikander outshine everyone.

Much like Tom Hooper's past projects, The Danish Girl is a visual delight. It's easy for filmmakers to make already scenic landscapes look good. However, it takes a truly remarkable cinematographer like Danny Cohen to make even a simple scene with two people talking look good. The visuals are complemented by an equally noteworthy soundtrack by Alexandre Desplat.

If you're looking for a completely accurate retelling of Lili Elbe's story, you might find yourself a little disappointed. The Danish Girl takes liberties with the true story, and some of the finer aspects are lost in the translation to the screen. Still, the film is a stellar addition to the filmographies of everyone involved, and is definitely worth watching.

Why You Should Watch this Movie:
The Danish Girl is the sympathetic retelling of a transgendered woman's journey. The film features noteworthy performances, breathtaking visuals and an outstanding soundtrack, making it the perfect film to watch this weekend.
