There are some things we’ve all begun to expect from a Tarantino film – crime, violence and foul mouths being a few of them. All these signature elements, and more, come together in The Hateful Eight.
The film traces the journey of two bounty hunters – Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson) and John Ruth (Kurt Russell). They cross paths when Ruth is en route to deliver his bounty, Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh). However, things don’t quite go as planned when Mother Nature decides to intervene. The bloodbath begins when the crew, joined by Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), decides to take shelter from a blizzard at Minnie’s Haberdashery.
Much like Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds, The Hateful Eight explores race and its many implications. While most of this is done through tongue-in-cheek dialogues, other references are more obvious; as obvious as a horse cart being drawn by two horses – one black and another white. Though this may occasionally feel a little too in-your-face, it certainly helps drive the point home. And if there’s one person who knows how to do that, it’s Quentin Tarantino.
It also helps that the film has a stellar cast that brings Tarantino’s script to life. Though they are the "Hateful Eight", they do have moments that make you want to root for them… until they inevitably go back to being their usual selves. It would be nearly impossible to pick the best actor from a cast that includes the likes of Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth and Bruce Dern. Each actor is phenomenal, and will even inspire a moral dilemma within the viewer.Despite all of this, though, The Hateful Eight is not for the faint of heart. From its not-so-subtle references to racism to the gore and the violence, the film is a lot to take in. If you can stomach a brutal, no-holds-barred movie about post-Civil War America, this one must not be missed.
Why You Should Watch this Movie:
The Hateful Eight finds beauty in brutality, right from the blood-spattered snow to the perfectly choreographed violence. If you’re looking to enjoy another gritty, power-packed and wonderfully acted addition to Tarantino’s catalog, this is the perfect film for you.
