Review: Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in a good old fashioned cheesy entertainer. The veteran star chose to return in Director Jee-woon Kim’s The Last Stand, a border town drama bursting with guns, explosions and good guys versus bad guys, plus a few jokes thrown in for good measure. Former governor of California cast as a small town sheriff up against a drug lord, puts Arnold Schwarzenegger back on the action scene. True Arnie fans will thank Jee-woon Kim for bringing ‘80s star back in his home turf & will love watching him pull bullets into the bad guys spouting cheap one-liners.
The story, devoid of any complexities whatsoever, is simple and straight. Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger), a former L.A. cop moves to a sleepy Arizona border town where nothing happens. That is, until drug kingpin (Eduardo Noriega) evades a federal agent (Forest Whitaker) in a stolen speedy car with only the town’s sheriff, Arnold, between him and the Mexican border.
Forest Whittaker is the frustrated, ever trying never succeeding FBI agent who’s always a step behind in the chase. Jaimie Alexander is a sexy badass. As the goofball proprietor of a gun museum, Johnny Knoxville offers comic relief. Yes, you guessed it right, the odd assortment of weapons he stores will all be conveniently lent out for free use during the climatic show down.
It’s that kind of a movie.
If you’ve ever seen any of Director Jee-woon’s previous works (The Good, the Bad, the Weird) then you’ll know he sure can make a solid action-comedy. Be thrilled as the camera weaves in and out of gunfire. There’s a magnificent car chase through the cornfield – two cars cutting through a thick maize carpet – the country life may not be that quiet & simple after all!
Verdict: Schwarzenegger back in action in a predictable yet fun action-comedy.
