The Walk: Get Your Adrenaline Rushing

A twenty-four year old man set out to change his life forever on the morning of 7th August 1974. He was a tight-rope walker from France who had a zany dream in his eyes. He wanted to perform a tight-rope walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City. It sounds crazy enough when you think of just the idea, but what’s truly enthralling is that he actually achieved this dream. Philippe Petit walked on the rope for forty-five minutes making eight passes along the rope. Philippe called it ‘le coup’ and what a coup it was! The Walk is the story of how he achieved this incredible triumph.

Quick Facts about Philippe Petit & his Coup
– Philippe Petit conceived this insane idea when he was 17, after reading about the proposed construction of the Twin Towers in New York.
– The height of the Twin Towers is not the same.  The North Tower is 417 metres high, while the South Tower is 415 metres high.
–  In layman’s terms, that’s about 110 stories high. So, Philippe Petit was 411 metres off the ground.
– The distance between the towers was 42 metres and Philippe walked on a 61-metre long wire.
– For balance, he was holding a 25-kg rod that was 8 metres long.
– All charges against Philippe were dropped in exchange of a free aerial show for children in Central Park. He was also given a lifetime pass to the Twin Towers’ Observation Deck.
