Thor: Ragnarok – Film Review – Hell’a Fantastic

Verdict: Thor and Hulk's adventure is a hilarious and a fantastic addition to the franchise.

Marvel Cinematic Universe has changed the way we look at movies and movie universes. Never has such a grand plan been set in motion and we are continuously in awe of what they have been trying to achieve. While we were all okay with Iron Man and Captain America saving the day there was always something alien when it came to a character like Thor. The previous two installments have always been focused on Earth but that is all about to change with Thor: Ragnarok. Taika Waititi has indeed changed everything and in doing so has delivered the best Thor yet.

Ragnarok

What's Thor: Ragnarok About:

Set two years after the events of the last Avengers, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is captured by Surtur (voiced by Clancy Brown). Thor had been traveling to find the infinity stones and has been dreaming about the impending Ragnarok. Thor successfully manages to capture Surtur and returns back to Asgard. He discovers Loki's (Tom Hiddleston) duplicity and they both travel to Midgard (Earth) to get Odin (Sir Anthony Hopkins) back. Once on Earth, a series of events (which will be spoilers if we mention them) lead Hela (Cate Blanchett) the Goddess of Death to be released from her prison and eventually Thor and Loki land up on Sakaar. Thor is captured by Valkyrie and brought to the Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) who puts him in a ring with the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo). Thor,  Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) and Bruce Banner team up to form Revengers (I am not making this up) and plan to escape Sakaar to stop Ragnarok. Meanwhile, Heimdall is on Asgard saving the common folk from the wrath of Hela.

What Works:

In spite of a grave premise, this movie is hilarious. From Rock Paper Scissor jokes to situational comedy, the movie has it all. Thor is funnier than ever and we have Taika Waititi to thank for that. Each scene is vivid and musical.  The stakes are raised and all this is done without the humor going away.

Cate Blanchett as Hela is terrifying and that is a credit to the actress. She is the first female villain in MCU and she gives a tough competition to all the villains. It is refreshing to see Tessa Thompson as the Valkyrie as she matches Thor in every aspect (right from his drinking to his fighting).

While there is a lot of skepticism around Marvel pulling off Infinity War successfully, they have done a fantastic job with this one handling so many plots and subplots at the same time. While there also has been criticism regarding movies just being stepping stones to the next one, this one is a great stand-alone movie with some references to the earlier movies but nothing when it comes to the future movies.

Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin has definitely been the highlight of the teaser trailer and it makes an appearance in the movie as well. Apart from that  Mark Mothersbaugh does an amazing job with the background score going with the whole 80's sci-fi theme.

Ragnarok

What Could Have Been Better:

Everything was exceeding our expectations when it comes to this Asgardian God. We might say that there could be a little less humor but it is not easy to take the Hammer wielding God seriously with his cape and all and previous directors taking the serious stance. We could say we would like a few more easter eggs but it was a relief we didn't have to analyze every frame looking for one. Although, the movie could be a little longer.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

This is hammers down the best Thor movie so far. Taika Waititi proves that great talent and a great amount of money can do a lot of fantastic stuff (this is the director's most expensive movie till date). Stan Lee's voice cameo is chopping awesome. The movie is hilarious and a treat for all movie lovers.

P.S.: There is a post-credit scene (duh!)

P.P.S. : You will thank us if you book the IMAX experience.

I watched Thor and I must say that it is the best 3D movie till now. Graphics is done perfectly and the movie is full of humour which makes the movie fun filled. I never felt a drag in the movie and that Is one of the best things. A good sci-fi movie

    with action and comedy mix.
