Throwback Thursday: When Movies Made First Contact With the Aliens

Since time immemorial we have wondered about life beyond our planet. Our continuous ambition to search among the stars for other aliens is an exciting prospect while frightening. In absence of contact with aliens in real life we turned to the world of fiction where our imaginations took charge of the narrative and thousands of scenarios were born where we imagined the interactions with alien life forms.

Sometimes we conquered them and there were times we were vanquished and very few times we co-existed peacefully. It seems a fad of a couple of decades when we think about aliens in movies. However, we made contact with the aliens in reel life within the first decade of cinema

Today, we go back in time and take a look at some of the first alien movies.

A Trip to the Moon (1902)
Movies - BookMyShowWe may have stepped on the moon in the 60s but cinema went there way before. They also gave the moon a face and inhabitants called the Selenite. This black-and-white silent movie has now been restored and is still available if you want to grab a copy.

Excursion to the Moon (1908)
Movies - BookMyShowUntil we were completely sure about the lack of life on moon, this waxing and waning satellite was hovering over the thoughts of everyone's imagination. An unofficial remake of A Trip to the Moon, the movie goes a little differently than the first one. This silent movie is also a worthy watch.

A Trip to Mars (1918)
Movies - BookMyShowThis silent movie was restored in 2006 and is available online. Once we had our fill of the moon, we set our sights further to our neighboring planet and launched an excursion there. Surprisingly humans encounter a peaceful civilization and they return. This is one of the few movies in which we don't encounter the grand alien versus human fight.

The First Men in the Moon (1919)
This is one of those movies you might be able to grab a copy of but it has made its way to the list of 75 Most Wanted Lost Films. This movie was based on H.G. Wells' novel of the same name and is one of the first movies to be fully adapted from a novel. There are two more adaptations of the same novel, which were released in the years 1964 and 2010.

The Man from M.A.R.S. (1922)
Another one of the lost films, this was perhaps the first movie to be made in a primitive form of 3D and it was later converted into 2D. The movie talks about a scientist's adventures on Mars and how he learnt some secrets that makes him wealthy.

Aelita (1924)
Movies - BookMyShowThe movie is set in the future where with a telescope it is easy for people on Mars to see people on Earth. Amidst this setting is a man landing on Mars and being a part of an uprising that establishes dictatorial rule on Mars.

Aliens have been on our mind a little longer than we thought, haven't they? Catch up with these movies to admire the quality they came up with keeping in mind the technical restraints. Do share it with your friends.
