In a clutter of films of a wide variety which is Bollywood today, we find some extremely valuable gems that are and will be remembered for generations. Sometimes it takes the audience some years to realize the value of these movies while the positive response is instantaneous in other cases. To prove that time does travel fast and that we are getting really old, we have compiled a list of some such awesomeness from Bollywood, which released 18 years ago. This weekend, binge watch these movies because trust us, you will love watching them all over again like we did.

A love story against the backdrop of terrorism with AR Rahman’s music in the background, Dil Se was Preity Zinta’s debut movie and it also starred Shah Rukh Khan and Manisha Koirala in lead roles. The famous song ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya‘, which was shot on a train is still etched in people’s memories.

This movie based on the exploits of a dacoit wasn’t a huge success in its time. However, over the years, it has managed to gain a cult following.The terrorism of the dacoits over villages was a popular theme in 70s and 80s. But instead of "angry young men" fighting them, China Gate showed a team of expelled army officers doing the job. ‘Chamma Chamma’ featuring Urmila Matondkar also helped the movie gain a lot of popularity back in the day; even Hollywood took notice.

The film which made Manoj Bajpayee an overnight success and his character Bhiku Mhatre a massive hit is still remembered till date. This was by far the most popular movie in the series of gangster-based ones made by Ram Gopal Varma. Satya created a new genre of moviemaking called Mumbai noir. Watch it for the amazing performances, the brutality that is the Mumbai crime world, and the magic created by the team of Ram Gopal Varma, Anurag Kashyap and Saurabh Shukla.

 

Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha

The year also saw some sweet rom-coms. One of them was Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha. Kajol and Ajay Devgan’s chemistry already was a hit with their last movie Ishq. Things moved up a notch with this movie. It is an unofficial remake of the movie French Kiss starring Kevin Kline and Meg Ryan. The beautiful music by Jatin-Lalit added to the charm of the movie.

 

Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya

This movie marked the beginning of Salman Khan dropping his shirt at least once in each of his movies. It featured a happy, kooky version of bhai instead of the angry man we see today.  Arbaaz Khan as Kajol’s brother onscreen was also nominated for a Filmfare award for the Best Supporting Actor. This lighthearted film makes you laugh and cry and tugs at all the right strings. It proves that a simple story can go a long way in winning the hearts of the audience.
