Some Times: CinePlay Review

What is happening to this country? Can we advertise on the moon? What kind of friend are you? What will it take to get you to commit? Your dad beat your mummy?

These are just a few of the questions that plague Paramjit Singh Duggal, fondly known as Pammie, Parmeetay and Doggie. Some Times chronicles his journey as he goes about life trying to figure out the answers to these questions, which is easier said than done.

Pammi, like most 20-somethings, finds himself stuck between what he wants to do and what is expected of him. From a disapproving father to a neurotic boss, his life seems to have more than its fair share of chaos. But he also has a lot going for him. Good friends, good whisky and good weed. Seems like an ordinary life, right? It is, until one night of debauchery, when everything takes a turn for the worse!

Though the strength of most CinePlays lies in their cinematography, Some Times takes this to a whole new level. It takes what’s best about both mediums – cinema and theatre – and the resulting product is a visual masterpiece. With its commendable point-of-view shots and stunning light work, this is arguably one of CinePlay’s most aesthetically pleasing productions.

Another strength of Some Times lies in its character portraits. Each character in the play can be related to someone we’ve all come across in our day-to-day lives – Right from his pseudo-intellectual stoner friends to the crazy lady in the coffee shop! And then there’s Pammi. His character is a mirror, reminding us of all the uncertainties we’ve faced in our lives. He perfectly sums up our quest to find answers, and ultimately ourselves.

It also helps that all the actors wonderfully bring their respective characters to life. From Adhaar Khurana’s depiction of Pammi to Namit Das’ short yet memorable part, there isn’t a single performance that is anything less than noteworthy.

In many ways, Some Times will take you down memory lane, making you relive the good as well as the bad. It is a roller-coaster ride of emotions, which will ask more questions than it answers. And somehow, this works. Watch the play, which takes on some existential questions we’ve all had, in a simple yet effective way. It is simultaneously light-hearted and thought-provoking, giving viewers the best of both worlds!
