TMNT: Out of the Shadows: Film Review – Turtles in Action

Verdict: A thorough improvement from the first installment.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014), which was a reboot of the TMNT series, has returned with a sequel titled ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows‘. While most sequels are not as good as their predecessors, this movie was certainly an improvement from the first one. With a change in director but same producers and cast, let’s see what makes this movie a better sequel.

Continuing where they left off in the previous installment, Shredder (Brian Tee), who was previously defeated and captured by the turtles has now escaped captivity. The four turtle brothers – Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello and Raphael must repeat the feat. With an opening scene that shows the funny and goofy side of the turtles, it’s a good thing that it is quickly followed by an action sequence, wasting no time to kick things off.

Considering they are Ninjas, they have never really been seen in public. Hence they have a hard time stopping Shredder. Shredder’s plan is to ‘take over the world’ just like other villains. It is only soon after that we realize that he isn’t the only villain, with Krang being no surprise addition. Krang plans to create a portal, so he can exit his dimension and enter our physical world as we know it, eventually invading it through extraterrestrial activity.
Unlike the previous one, this movie focuses more on the turtles than the human characters like April O’Neil (Megan Fox), Vernon Fenwick (Will Arnett) and Casey Jones (Stephen Amell). Three of them work together with the turtles, helping them in their mission. Megan Fox plays the role of a reporter, who is their main accomplice, similar to her role in Michael Bay‘s Transformers, in which also she helps out her superhero friends.

With some neatly executed action sequences (and also, none that drag on), one could guess that Michael Bay was involved, although as a producer. With no complaints of the background score and little complaints of the CGI/special effects, the film serves as an adequate action saga. The turtles are not always as funny as they think, with some silly moments in the film. If you are a fan of TMNT, make sure you catch this one. If you’re not a fan, you’d rather watch this sequel instead of the first one.

Why You Should Watch This Movie: Clocking in under two hours, it makes for a decent watch owing to its action sequences.
