To Rome With Love: Movie Review

Review: Rome, a city that exudes love and charm just at the sound of it. The architecture, the culture, and all things beautiful that live on from the world that existed many centuries ago. Like most Woody Allen films, this one too promises a picturesque view of the city teamed with the setting of the gentle story. Of course, Midnight in Paris was a tad-bit more gripping yet lovable than this one, but again, there isn’t any comparison  between one masterpiece and another one.

The film opens in the midst of a busy street where a jovial traffic policeman introduces himself and thus starts the story about different people who co-exist but their lives never converge. It’s whimsical, it’s romantic, satirically funny, something you will take an instant liking to while the film progresses. Yes, it is not your perfect film ’cause you expect a lot more from the visionary director that Allen is. In his words, he is ‘someone ahead of his time’. Well, I couldn’t agree more.

Rome is, indeed, an enchanting city. To have a romantic-comedy set in the city, that you can feast your eyes on, nothing could be better. If your eyes did the talking, you’d find yourself say, enchante every time the scene changes. Most of all, the ensemble cast does wonders to this neatly woven script. The only reason you may feel disconnected is due to its fairytale value, which transports you into a different world, parallel world if I may say so. If you are the practical realists, then this one would barely appeal to your usual movie taste.

Roberto Benigni, Penelope Cruz, Alec Baldwin, Woody Allen, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page amongst the others make it all worth it. Especially since most of them have in the past been bestowed with adulations for their stellar performances in their respective films/TV series before all of them meet here in this film. Honestly speaking, an intelligent script is always better than nothing at all, the comparison to the previous, ‘better’ films made by Allen shouldn’t be held as the benchmark for a film.

The beauty in all his films is that he simply adores all his characters so much that you find yourself loving them all the more by the end of the visual treat clubbed with a good comic timing. Picture this, what would you do when one morning you wake up and find yourself a celebrity? Or a figment of your imagination takes you back a couple of years and you’re reliving some of the most cherished years of your life? Every story has a lesson attached to it. I believe that even the non-believers will find themselves smiling when they walk out of the theatres 120 odd-mins later. My favorite, off the four unrelated stories is the one that showcases Woody Allen himself, as a retired opera director who finds it difficult to come to terms with his newly, albeit involuntarily acquired retirement. Even at 76, the director delivers what is called a sweet, fuzzy story. Cheers to many more!

Verdict: A sweet, whimsical perspective of life & relationships, Woody Allen style!
