What it cost: 378.5 million USD

It was the third highest grossing film in 2011, making 1.05 billion USD at the box office. Depp was reportedly paid 55.5 million USD for his role. On Stranger Tides was also the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie to be released in 3D, a tradition that continued into the next 2017 movie, Salazar's Revenge.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

What it cost: 293 million USD

Was it worth it: Sony decided to reboot Spiderman with a new actor, choosing Andrew Garfield to take over Tobey Maguire's role. However, plans fell apart for future movies of Amazing Spider-Man after Garfield was removed from the series and Sony finally decided to lend the character of Spiderman over to Marvel.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

What it cost: 279.9 million USD

Spiderman 3 (2007)

What it cost: 258 million USD

Was it worth it: Sam Raimi's trilogy will be remembered as one of the best superhero series to be made. It expanded the reach of superheroes to much of the modern audience. Spiderman 3 might have its faults, but it was a fitting end to a superhero that many of today's young adults grew up with.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

What it cost: 250 million USD

Was it worth it: By the time the fifth movie came to be made, Harry Potter had already gained a worldwide following. Although slightly different from the books, it was still universally praised.

What it cost: 250 million USD

Was it worth it: Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy received critical acclaim and praise from the audience. The third Hobbit film became Peter Jackson's most expensive film and was a commercial success providing closure to another stunning series.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

What it cost: 250 million USD

Was it worth it: DC is not far behind Marvel in spending money on their films. The studio sunk a lot of money into Batman v Superman. Although it wasn't received positively by the critics, it was a box office hit, grossing over 800 million USD. The trend in negative reviews and positive earnings continued for DC with Suicide Squad, but the tide finally turned with Wonder Woman, which was a critical and commercial success.

Captain America: Civil War (2016)

What it cost: 250 million USD

Was it worth it: With almost all of the cast of Avengers, Captain America 3 was basically an Avengers 2.5It surpassed the box office collection of the previous movie, Captain America: The Winter Soldier by more than 200 million USD, proving that the investment on bringing all the characters together was a good decision.

What it cost: 250 million USD

Was it worth it: The eighth installment of the franchise was the first to not star Paul Walker. The Fast and the Furious series had been building up to be bigger than the previous, so it was no surprise when The Fate of the Furious went from having just vehicles to involving a submarine explosion. Avatar (2009)

What it cost: 237 million USD
