Almost all of our heroes have played cops in films. Fighting crime, beating up the baddies and ending up as vigilantes. But what happens when the same heroes land up on the other side of the bars? We do not see it happen too often, but Bollywood has had its fair share of movies with the protagonist getting thrown into jail. Those white uniforms, that small, lone window in one corner of the room, and the jailer spouting the infamous, ‘Madam aajka visiting time khatam ho chuka hai, kal aana’. Here we take a look at 5 of the most promising Bollywood actors who played the role of a prisoner:
1. Ajay Devgn – The Legend of Bhagat Singh
Probably one of the oldest, and as the title suggests, the most legendary jail stories of all time. The film brings to light all that the jails in the pre independence era were known for. Be it force feeding or unfair politics. There have been multiple movies made based on the life of the freedom fighter, but Ajay Devgn’s portrayal in this one has by far been the most favourable.
2. Neil Nitin Mukesh – Jail
Known for making realistic films, Madhur Bhandarkar does full justice to his forte and succeeds in the onscreen portrayal of the underbelly of Indian jails. Complementing his work is Neil Nitin Mukesh as Parag Dixit, who gets jailed for false possesion of narcotics and evidence tampering.
3. Shah Rukh Khan – Veer Zaara
False accusations force Squadron Leader Veer Pratap Singh to spend 22 years of his life in a jail across the border. As much as Shah Rukh sent heart beats racing while donning the Air Force uniform in this movie, him as the grey haired kaidi number 786 received wide applause as well.
4. John Abraham – New York
A film based on the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks that shook the whole of America, John Abraham in this movie convincingly plays a 9/11 detainee who is put behind bars just because of his race.
5. Rajkummar Rao – Shahid
Rajkummar Rao plays the infamous deceased lawyer Shahid Azmi in the film. The cruelties he suffers in the jail, while being falsely accused of terrorism compel him to take up law and clean things up. This has been portrayed in a very realistic manner in the film and Rao goes to great lengths to make his portrayal of an inmate look authentic.
