The British Empire might have been stripped of their power and colonies, but their influence continues to stay. We still look at weddings and births in the family with great pomp and everything is still under the scrutiny of the people. Based on a book by the same name, Victoria and Abdul recounts the story of the time when the Queen's confidante was Abdul, a servant from India. The novel is based on the letters which were in possession of Abdul's family. Directed by Stephen Frears, the trailer promises a light story with a soul. Because beneath the crown and behind the face of monarchy, they are just humans.
To play Queen Victoria, they could not have anyone less than Dame. Dame Judi Dench who has played this before, steps into it naturally. She carries the weight of playing a Queen who has had enough with life. In her previous stint as Queen Victoria, she was grieving widow while now she is trying to find meaning in her life. There are enough times you can hear her saying she was the Queen of England. Ali Fazal seems to be making a name for himself overseas. He made his debut with a cameo in Furious 7 and has moved on to bigger things. He impresses us as the titular character and manages to shine despite sharing screen space with Dame Judi Dench. This tale of friendship seems different than the ones we have been seeing. The cast also includes Eddie Izzard and Tim Pigot-Smith. The movie is set to release on 22nd September.
