A Tryst with Magic: Nicolai Friedrich

"Those who don’t believe in magic, will never find it."  Roald Dahl

27 July. St. Andrews Auditorium, Bandra.

That Sunday evening something extraordinary happened. Something enchanting, yet peculiar. The stage was illuminated with a serene blue light and the spotlight was on a man, dressed in a black suit. “Wingardium Leviosa”, he uttered. The time stopped for a moment. As we watched, a table slowly levitated in the air. That moment, an aura of magic and awe surrounded us.
That man is Nicolai Friedrich.

German magician Nicolai Friedrich is a master of illusion. In case you aren’t aware, Nicolai was crowned the best mentalist in the world in 2009 at the World Championship of Magic.

That evening, Friedrich enthralled us with impossible feats and mind games. He combines his mental magic with comedy to entertain the crowd. In one act, the master of illusion pulled out an ordinary salt shaker from his pocket and sprinkled on a piece of paper. “It doesn’t work. But it looks great,” he said and smiled. It left the whole theater roaring with laughter.

We all wish to travel back in time. Undo things and create a different future. But, it isn’t possible. But, that magical evening was different. We were transported back in time, even if it was just for 45 seconds. Nicolai took us on a short trip against time. Magic or just a figment of imagination? Still wondering.

From popping a bowling ball out of a drawing pad to making a dreamy snowfall, Nicolai amazed us. His illusions and mind readings are exquisite. And yes, he is brilliant with numbers too. Oh! That number 35. How did he do that? Amazing!

When you are at a Nicoloi Friedrich’s show, you can expect to be wowed by his crazy predictions, incredible feats, and unlikely coincidences. After almost every trick you will question yourself, if reality is a moving target in this unreal world.

Magic or illusion always makes us curious. For skeptics, it might be just be a sleight of hand, but you can’t deny the fact that it always leaves us befuddled yet fascinated. That evening was one such day, when we witnessed amazing visual artistry.

Ashvin Gidwani Productions

Until then, “Don’t let the muggles get you down”.
