Tum Bin 2: Film Review – A Romantic Tragedy

Verdict: An over-the-top, romantic sob fest.

It was 15 years ago that Anubhav Sinha’s film Tum Bin released and was a surprising hit among the masses. 2016 has been the year of sequels with numerous filmmakers attempting a sequel, hoping to bank on the success of the first. While this has worked for a film like Aashiqui 2, director and writer Anubhav Sinha’s attempt at a glamorous remake of the original does not do wonders.

The story of Tum Bin 2 does not step away from the original. Amar (Aashim Gulati) and Taran (Neha Sharma) are a happy couple who are soon-to-be married. Amar is a skiing enthusiast and the couple head to the mountains for a vacation, where Amar meets with an accident and is presumed dead. Taran and Amar’s father are devastated by his sudden death and are coping in their own ways with this unfortunate incident, when Shekhar (Aditya Seal) enters their life. He is charming, handsome, helpful and in no time, he wins over their hearts. Not only does he become like a second son for Papaji (Kanwaljit Singh) but a special connection soon starts blooming between Shekhar and Taran. And while things finally seem to be going back to normal with Shekhar filling in the gap that Amar’s death left, happily ever after seems like a far-stretched reality.

Tum Bin 2: Film Review - A Romantic Tragedy-BookMyShow

Just 30 seconds into the movie, we are graced with a romantic song set among the snow-clad mountains of Scotland. There has been no hype about the film before its release except for its music which deserves a special mention. The film marks the debut of television actor Aashim Gulati who does not disappoint. Neha Sharma gives an intense performance and you will find yourself connecting to her character, however, her role does not require much apart from sobbing her eyes out.

Despite its exotic locations, charming cast and soulful music, the film lacks a certain depth to keep it afloat. The story gets too slow and stretchy at times but it will no doubt tug at your heartstrings. While the script is another major let-down, the film is shot beautifully and is visually stunning.
